Which US marathons produce Boston qualifiers in practice — course data, typical BQ rates, and how to match a race to your qualifying window.
Most BQ chasers fixate on the training block — mileage, long runs, tempos. Fair enough. But a strong block on the wrong course still leaves you short at mile 22 — humid heat, crowded paths, or a field where nobody is racing the clock.
A cool morning, a certified route, and a field full of people running your pace changes the maths entirely.
The races below earned their place here because finishers actually qualify at high rates — not because they look flat on a profile chart. BQ rate means the share of runners who beat their age-group standard in a given year. Small elite-only races can skew that number, but over thousands of finishers it tells you which courses deliver.

Two marathons can both be certified and flat and still produce very different results. These five checks explain why.
Talk to runners who have qualified more than once. CIM, Baystate, Chicago, and Houston appear on almost every shortlist, wherever people live.
Western runners usually name the California International Marathon first. Everyone calls it CIM.
The course runs point-to-point from Folsom to downtown Sacramento with about 103 metres of net descent. Early December mornings are cool. The field draws plenty of competitive age-group runners, not just tourists.
Recent editions have produced BQ rates around 25% — high for a race this size. The net drop sits well below the B.A.A. downhill adjustment threshold. If you want one December race on the West Coast, this is the one people actually run.
Northeast runners often point to the Baystate Marathon in Lowell, Massachusetts. Flat, fast miles along the Merrimack River. Typical October temps land in the mid-40s to low 60s °F.
Roughly a quarter of finishers qualify in a typical year. The field caps around 1,700, so you skip Chicago-scale corral waits but still get a serious, well-run race.
No US marathon sends more qualifiers to Boston in raw numbers than the Chicago Marathon. The 2024 field of about 52,000 produced roughly 7,300 BQs — a qualifier rate near 14%.
Marathon Focus lists Chicago as very flat: 74 metres of total climbing. The course earns its reputation. Getting a bib is the hard part; lottery demand is fierce.
Race morning in a field this size means standing around before the start. Pacing groups, once you are moving, are strong. Worth the logistics if you land an entry.
The Houston Marathon suits anyone peaking in January after an autumn build. Mostly flat, about 68 metres of climbing, roughly 8,500 finishers.
BQ rates in recent years have hovered around 17%. Race-day temps usually sit in the mid-40s to low 60s °F. Runners in the South often prefer January over a December CIM or October Baystate peak.
Humidity can bite on mild years. Read a few recent race reports before you commit.
Beyond the headline names, a handful of smaller Midwest marathons post strong BQ numbers on flat ground:
Certification and a low elevation chart confirm the course is legal. They do not tell you whether runners actually qualify. BQ rate is the gap between those two things.
Two patterns catch people out:
Check observed BQ rates and read recent race reports before you register. A profile that suits elites can still disappoint when the field and conditions are working against you.
Gravity helps on net-downhill layouts, which is why they crowd BQ rankings. From the 2027 Boston registration cycle, the B.A.A. will adjust qualifying times on steep descents: add five minutes for 1,500–2,999 ft of net loss, ten minutes for 3,000–5,999 ft.
CIM's roughly 340-foot net drop stays under the threshold. The REVEL Mt. Charleston Marathon does not — BQ rates above 40% come with a ten-minute penalty on the submitted time. The descent can still help you run fast; build that penalty into your buffer.
Your BQ has to land inside the B.A.A. registration window for your target Boston year, usually about 18 months out. Map it backwards:
Filter the marathon calendar by month once your window is set.
Leave buffer beyond the published standard. Boston cut-off times often run faster than the listed BQ.

CIM and Baystate are missing from that list because their total climbing exceeds 120 metres. They remain excellent BQ targets — the hub is a filter, not a full catalogue.
On each marathon page, compare elevation profiles, finisher counts, weather, and entry rules. Shortlist two or three races, confirm USATF certification with the organiser, and register early where places go quickly.
