Lottery and ballot marathons allocate places by random draw — often because demand far exceeds the field limit. World Marathon Majors like New York City and London are the most famous examples, but dozens of city races worldwide use the same model.

135 marathons use a lottery or ballot for at least part of their entry allocation, sorted by typical field size. Charity bibs and tour-operator packages often provide an alternative route when the draw does not go your way.
